Love On Tabletop

***Disclaimer: I got this idea from Pinterest, an exercise where you write a 20 word sentence, then a 19 word sentence, and so on, ending the story with one word.***

“You slowly make your way through the large mouth of the dark empty cave, Finnian and Ness leading the way…”

The DM looked across the table, fingers steepled under his chin, eyeing me, the dashing elf rogue party leader.

I fiddled with my dice as “Ness” sat beside me, so close our arms touched ever so lightly.

My elf ranger companion - Ness, a.k.a. Elliot, secretly the love of my life - was smiling.

“I would like to…check for traps?” I uttered none too convincingly as I rolled perception.

Elliot met my gaze and, with a small smile, said, “I’ll go check it out.”

Seeing my natural one, she made her own attempt at a better investigation check.

Pleased with her seventeen, she waited for the DM to paint the scene.

“You discover a magnificent dragon’s hoard, the valuables of your fallen enemy.”

“Ness” rubbed her hands together, inquiring after a chest she sought.

I flanked her to the chest, apprehension surging through me.

“Wait!” I exclaimed as she reached for the lock.

After a successful athletics check, I didn’t think.

I pulled her out of the way.

An explosion shook the cave roof.

“You saved me,” she said.

She kissed my cheek.

I smiled, flushing.

Heart racing.

Floating.
